Open Positions

The Teaching Drum is growing and has periodic openings in a number of areas, as well as a need for volunteers. If you want to make your draw to Native Lifeway a part of your life, please contact us whether or not you qualify for one of our positions; we often have projects that are not listed here or do not require a specific skill, and we'll do our best to create an opening for you. Please see our volunteer page where we have a calendar of foraging and gathering events for the year that you could take part in. One thing to keep in mind: a position at the Teaching Drum is more than a job, it's a way of life.

Immediate Need:

We have two positions we are in dire need of filling, as having them vacant affects our every-day ability to function. Please see general compensation for all positions and more listings below.

Administrative Coordinator
We are looking a self-motivated individual to serve as the administrative and organizational hub of our busy outdoor school. Duties include facilitating various activities and tasks of the multiple areas of the school, which can include our outdoor programs, our wild foods and materials gathering, and maintenance of any of our infrastructures, in addition to regularly maintaining organization of our small administrative center, sales center, and records archives. This position will require someone who is comfortable working with people, interfacing extensively with our community around the world, whether by phone, e-mail or in person, as well as with everyone at the school (volunteers, program participants, staff-volunteers). We are looking for someone who is comfortable with computers (word processing, e-mail, internet, and web pages), an excellent organizer, and who can keep accurate and detailed records.

Grounds Coordinator:
Duties include general construction and repair on school buildings (standard and log construction), rough and finish carpentry, workshop maintenance, routine auto maintenance, and a small amount of electrical and plumbing.

Technology Assistant:
Duties include computer and network system repair and maintenance, webpage design, and updating video filming of courses, workshops, and primitive skills experiments, as well as running a small recording studio.

Compensation

You may find yourself comfortable here if...

You have a thirst to dwell more in communion with the natural world and everyone in it. You are intent on healing through the scar tissue you've accumulated, and on releasing hurtful habits and relearning our natural, healthful ways of being. You want to speak your truth and live your truth; to be able to express your feelings, deal healthily with conflict as it comes up. You want to bring your issues to the people involved, and deal directly with them.

You like a simple lifestyle, heating with wood, eating an organic and wild-foraged foods diet. You want to be a part of our alcohol, drug (including caffeine and nicotine) and pet-free environment, and you are interested in addressing addictive processes and relationship styles as well. Being at the Teaching Drum is more of a way of life than a job, with the privilege of joining a Circle of people with whom you share values and life goals.

For most people who are part of the school, the greatest draw is the opportunity to live in a community of people who are devoted to healing and a return to the ways of balance.
