Open Positions
We would like to invite a few people to join our Circle--see openings listed below.
You may find yourself comfortable here if you are on a spiritual quest, and want to honor who you really are and your intended purpose in this life. You have a thirst to dwell more in communion with the natural world and everyone in it. You are intent on healing through the scar tissue you've accumulated from a life in Civilized society, and on releasing hurtful habits and relearning our natural, healthful ways of being. You want to speak your truth and live your truth; to be able to express your feelings, deal healthily with conflict as it comes up. You want to bring your issues to the people involved, and deal directly with them.
You like a simple lifestyle, heating with wood, eating an organic and wild-foraged foods diet. You want to be a part of our alcohol, drug (including caffeine and nicotine) and pet-free environment, and you are interested in addressing addictive processes and relationship styles as well. You are excited that this is more of a way of life than a job, and that you have the privilege of joining a Circle of people with whom you share values and a way of life.
For most people who are part of the school, the greatest draw is the opportunity to live in a community of people who are devoted to healing and a return to the ways of balance.
Compensation
Because we are a small, volunteer-run, non-profit organization committed to sustainability, we find non-traditional ways to meet our material needs. All members of our community receive the following:
- fresh organic and wild food
- rustic communal living spaces where all utilities are paid, including slow but servicable internet, heat, electricity, etc.
- shared phone and vehicle use (personal gas expenses not included, cars are used as public transportation)
- an intentional social space committed to healing
- $200 a month stipend
Please email us at staffopenings (at) teachingdrum (dot) org
for how to apply, noting which position you are interested in. We require three professional references during the interview process, and a resume, where applicable.
Current Volunteer Staff Openings
Office Person
We are looking for a mature, self-motivated, well-rounded individual to serve as the administrative and organizational hub of our busy outdoor school and the small, intentional community that runs it. This position requires someone who can take the initiative: make things happen, get things done, and take a leadership role when necessary (also important is an ability to delegate or let others take over as appropriate). It requires being aware of and helping to facilitate various activities and tasks of the multiple layers of the school, which can include aspects of our outdoor programs, our wild foods and materials gathering, and maintenance of any of our infrastructures, as well as maintaining organization of our small administrative center. To become more familiar with the school, please see our website, www.teachingdrum.org.
This position will require someone who is solidly comfortable working with people, as it is interfacing extensively with the outside world, whether by phone, e-mail or in person, as well as with everyone at the school (volunteers, program participants, staff-volunteers), utilizing excellent communication skills in the process. We are looking for someone who is more than comfortable with computers (word processing, e-mail, internet, and web pages) and an excellent organizer, keeping accurate and detailed records.

Assist our editors with proofreading and research for Tamarack's books. We are looking for a mature, self-motivated individual with writing talent, organizational abilities, and strong communication skills to take an internship on our writing team--we will teach editing. Topic matter includes social change, personal healing, and primitive living. As an intern, you would be learning to adapt to and balance a variety of projects, including but not limited to:
- manuscript/article editing
- information organization
- research: publishers, agents, subject matter
- award submissions
- website expansion and maintenance (HTML and website design experience a plus)
- publicity tasks including blog editing/posting, email newsletters, proposal writing, and magazine submissions
