Although the designated and marked areas of the Umatilla National Forest are limited, there are many options available to Nordic skiers. A variety of landscapes await skiers, from dense forest canopies to vast open meadows. Many roads closed during the winter months allow skiers to explore the forest in winter. These roads are also accessible to snowmobiles, so it is advisable to exercise caution when skiing to avoid incidents. Harsh winter weather with wind, cold and snow can turn a weekend getaway into a tragedy. Knowledge of the area, weather, route and limitations of your body and equipment, as well as a little common sense, can ensure a safe and enjoyable excursion.

We emphasize the importance of checking the date in the Bluewood snow report, especially on weekends. For example, Friday`s snow report for Bluewood may indicate powder after the recent snowfall, but after a sunny and busy weekend with locals flocking to the mountains, skiing conditions (at any resort) can deteriorate quickly and late arrivals can see very different ski conditions. Sure, some people look for a deterioration in conditions in the snow report for the likely development of mogul slope fields, but for powder enthusiasts, and snowboarders in particular, this can mean following snow off the slopes. Of course, this doesn`t always happen quickly after fresh snowfall, especially in quiet, north-facing high-altitude resorts where real powder reserves can be found days or even weeks later. It is worth consulting the Bluewood Trail Map (in the menu above) for the location of favourable slopes, which can be described in the “Bluewood Snow Conditions” section of the snow report. In addition to the Bluewood snow report, we recommend that you check the snow forecast in the menu at the top of the page with our ski area guide. The following information was reported on November 23, 2022 (2:24 p.m.). Keep in mind that weather conditions can change quickly. The snow report describes downhill and off-piste skiing conditions at Bluewood. You can submit an updated snow report here. Trail and off-piste are often different, so we ask snow journalists to describe Bluewood and off-piste conditions separately.
