Before this system, these instructions were not printed on the article itself, but on a letter accompanying the article.
However, this system was inefficient, as it required employees to sift through documents delivered with disgraced instruments to find protest orders. Even if found, the instructions were not always clear, as the cumbersome method also did not require the protest instructions to appear on a piece of paper attached to the check. It has become easier overall to simply stamp NP and a brief explanation of why items are not paid directly on the disgraced instrument. This relieved the responsibility of not transmitting protest instructions with the disgraced instrument if that instrument passed through several banks on the way back to the original bank. If a collecting bank is ordered not to protest against items for non-payment, the issuing bank does not affix a protest stamp (NP) to the draft. The bank representative will provide the holder with a signed and notarized affidavit stating that the instrument in question has not been repurchased and why.
